Today is the Groundhog Day! It all started very long time ago in Europe when people believed that the badger had the power to predict the coming of spring. This tradition was brought over to North America and here it’s the groundhog (also known as marmot or woodchuck) who makes these “predictions”. On February 2 each year if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow meaning that there will still be 6 weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, then the spring is on the way. Today, Wiarton Willie, our Canadian “weather forecaster”, did not see his shadow, so it’s early spring for us here, yay!
